From the rolling hills of Piedmont in northwest Italy, Franco Serra Barbera d’Asti is the kind of honest, food-loving red the region does so well. Made from Barbera – Piedmont’s great everyday grape – it’s medium-bodied, dry, and built around the bright, mouth-watering acidity that makes Barbera such a natural at the dinner table.
Expect a glass of juicy red and dark fruit: cherry, raspberry and a touch of plum, lifted by hints of baking spice and dried herbs and carried on smooth, supple tannins. It’s approachable and easygoing rather than big or heavy – an uncomplicated pleasure.
That fresh acidity makes it a classic partner for tomato-based dishes, so reach for it with pasta al pomodoro, pizza or lasagne. It’s equally at home beside grilled meats or a board of Italian cheeses. Serve it slightly below room temperature.
