Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris are two names for the same grape. On the shelf, though, they often point you in different directions. Pinot Grigio commonly means a lighter-bodied wine with medium to high acidity. Pinot Gris commonly means a fuller-bodied wine with medium acidity. Think of the name as your first clue. Grape growing and ripeness at harvest can change the result, so check the region and the exact wine too.

These are common styles, not a description of every bottle.
Why can the styles be different?
Picking time is one reason. Earlier harvests are commonly associated with the light-bodied, medium-to-high-acid Pinot Grigio model. The fuller Pinot Gris model is commonly associated with later picking and may be dry or off-dry.
There is plenty of overlap. Friuli Venezia Giulia produces fuller Pinot Grigio, and Oregon producers may put either Pinot Gris or Pinot Grigio on a label. The name helps, but it cannot answer the whole question.
What does Pinot Grigio often signal?
Pinot Grigio has a strong association with northeastern Italy. Delle Venezie DOC covers Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia and the Autonomous Province of Trento.
Even within that denomination, you will find more than one style. Still Pinot Grigio may be white or ramato (coppery), and it may range from dry to medium sweet.
If you want a lighter-bodied wine with medium to high acidity, Pinot Grigio is a sensible place to begin. Check the exact wine before assuming it will be pale, dry or light-bodied.
What does Pinot Gris often signal?
Pinot Gris has a strong French association, especially with Alsace. The regional style is commonly full-bodied, with dry and off-dry examples.
Start here if you want more body, but check the wine rather than treating Pinot Gris as a sweetness scale. The name does not guarantee sweetness or body.
Is Pinot Gris sweeter than Pinot Grigio?
Not necessarily. Pinot Gris may be dry or off-dry, while Delle Venezie Pinot Grigio can range from dry to medium sweet. Sweetness belongs to the individual wine, not automatically to one name.
If sweetness matters to you, look for an exact producer description where one is available. You can also use our guide to dry wine to make sense of common sweetness terms.
How to choose a bottle
- Start with the region. Delle Venezie DOC points to northeastern Italy. Alsace points to the French Pinot Gris tradition.
- Treat the grape name as a clue. Oregon producers can use either name, so it is not enough on its own.
- Where available, use the producer’s description of the exact wine. Look for body, acidity and sweetness information instead of relying on a generic grape profile.
- Notice style terms. On Delle Venezie Pinot Grigio,
ramatomeans coppery and signals a visibly different style from a pale white wine.

Which one should you choose?
If you want a lighter-bodied wine with medium to high acidity, begin with Pinot Grigio. The Delle Venezie consortium suggests Pinot Grigio delle Venezie DOC with mixed fried seafood.
For more body, try Pinot Gris. Vins d’Alsace suggests its regional Pinot Gris with pork or veal roast and pan-fried girolle mushrooms.
From there, choose by the body, acidity and sweetness you enjoy, whatever version of the grape name appears on the label.
