Averna Amaro

Wondering what Averna actually tastes like? It’s smooth, rich and gently bittersweet — the gateway amaro for anyone curious about Italian bitters. Think dark caramel and candied orange peel up front, a ripple of cola-like spice, and a long, velvety finish of herbal tea, dried citrus and warm root spice. The bitterness is there, but it’s rounded and friendly rather than sharp.

That character comes from a closely guarded Sicilian recipe dating back generations: a secret infusion of around 60 herbs, roots and Mediterranean botanicals — bitter orange and lemon peel among the few that are public — macerated and then mellowed with caramel and sugar. The result is one of Italy’s most beloved amari, bottled at an easy-sipping 29% ABV.

Traditionally it’s an after-dinner digestif: pour it over ice with a slice of orange and let it do its soothing work. But it’s also a bartender’s secret weapon — its caramel-and-citrus depth makes a superb Black Manhattan, an amaro spritz, or a richer twist on a Negroni. Sip it neat, on the rocks, or shaken into a cocktail; either way, this is Italian bittersweet at its most welcoming.
