Product Description
Segla Margaux is the gateway into one of Bordeaux’s most admired estates. Produced by Château Rauzan-Ségla, a historic Second Growth classified in 1855, this is the château’s second wine, but it is treated with the same care and precision as the grand vin. The fruit comes from the estate’s own vineyards in Margaux, primarily from younger vines rooted in classic gravel and sand soils that naturally favor Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
The blend varies slightly by vintage, but Segla typically consists of a near-equal partnership of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with small additions of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Cabernet brings backbone, freshness, and dark cassis notes, while Merlot adds a supple, plush mid-palate. Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc contribute color, spice, and detail to the finish.
In the cellar, Segla is fermented in temperature-controlled tanks, then aged in French oak barrels for around 12–18 months, with only about 15–20% of the barrels being new. This lighter touch with new oak is intentional: it keeps the tannins fine and accessible, allows the floral and red-black fruit character of Margaux to shine, and means the wine can be enjoyed sooner than the château’s flagship bottling.
In the glass, Segla Margaux is typically medium to deep ruby with lifted aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, and ripe red cherry, often framed by hints of violet, cedar, and subtle baking spice. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and precise, showing ripe but polished tannins, a fresh acid line, and a long, graceful finish. The style is classic Margaux: elegant rather than heavy, structured yet silky, with enough concentration to reward cellaring.
Most vintages of Segla are ready to drink from about four to five years after harvest, but top years will comfortably develop for a decade or more. That combination of approachability, pedigree, and price is what makes Segla such a strong value proposition. It is an ideal choice for customers who want authentic classed-growth Margaux character, aromatic complexity, fine structure, and balance – without stepping into the highest price tier. Serve with roast lamb, grilled beef, or herb-roasted vegetables to let its finesse and depth really show.
