Product Description
Oban Single Malt Scotch stands as a timeless example of craftsmanship, tradition and balanced flavor. Nestled at the confluence of land and sea, the distillery was founded in 1794, predating the town that grew around it, and remains one of Scotland’s smallest licensed producers. Yet in its modest stillhouse and with just two skilled distillers at the helm, Oban consistently creates a whisky with global admiration.
Central to Oban’s appeal is its designation as a West Highland malt, a stylistic crossroads between the smoky island whiskies and the lighter Highland spirits. This gives Oban a unique maritime edge, with a soft brine undercurrent and restrained peat smoke balanced by rich malt sweetness.
Oban’s flagship bottling, the 14‑year‑old expression, is a core member of Diageo’s celebrated Classic Malts of Scotland. Aged exclusively in refill bourbon casks, it is bottled at 43 % ABV, offering approachable yet layered complexity. The nose presents bright citrus and heather‑honey aroma; the palate reveals orange zest, barley sweetness, saline dryness and whispering peat smoke; the finish is long, slightly dry with lingering sea‑salt notes.
Production is deliberately limited: with a capacity under 700 000 liters and daily non‑continuous runs, Oban puts quality over quantity. Its copper stills are unusually small, with a worm tub condenser giving softer, rounder spirit character. The long, five‑day fermentation enhances malty depth and aromatic richness.
Beyond the 14‑year standard, Oban occasionally releases rarer editions, including Distiller’s Editions finished in Montilla Fino sherry casks, and limited‑release bottlings aged 18, 21 or even 32 years for collectors.
This whisky is ideal for those seeking a dram with history, subtle coastal character, and refined balance. Whether enjoyed neat, with a drop of spring water, or alongside light seafood dishes, Oban invites you to experience the essence of the West Highlands in every sip.
