Product Description
This barley‑based Honkaku shochu offers a contemplative drinking experience shaped by tradition, time and terroir. Crafted at Tensei Distillery in Kagoshima, Mugi Hokka is distilled using a single atmospheric pot‑still method from heirloom two‑row Schooner barley. The mash includes 8% roasted barley blended with steamed grains and white barley koji, all fermented slowly and gently in soft spring water sourced from Kagoshima Prefecture—renowned for imparting a silky texture to spirits. Once distilled, the liquid is aged for a minimum of five years in enamel or ceramic tanks, allowing flavors to deepen and settle into a harmonious, mature expression.
On the nose and palate, expect rich, roasted aromas of coffee and dark chocolate melting into buttered toast and nutty undertones. The mouthfeel is warm and inviting, balanced by a subtle funk—think umami-rich mushroom notes and even a suggestion of bubblegum sweetness—without overwhelming aggression. With a modest ABV of 25%, this shochu is approachable and versatile. Enjoy it neat to appreciate its complexity, serve it on the rocks for cooling contrast or dilute with hot water (oyuwari) to awaken nuanced aromas and soften the texture.
Mugi Hokka stands out among barley shochus for its artisanal blend of ancient ingredients and patient production. It brings a compelling flavor profile to cocktail recipes as well—expert bartenders often recommend using it in whiskey-style drinks like Old Fashioned or Espresso Martini to accentuate its roast and earth tones while keeping the overall drink light and nuanced.
Whether you’re new to shochu or a connoisseur seeking depth, this one‑bottle spirit offers surprising warmth, character, and balance. Let Mugi Hokka transform ordinary enjoyment into a refined moment: an homage to Japanese craftsmanship, aged patience, and barley’s bold elegance.
