Product Description
Joma Spektakel Orange is a standout example of what modern Austrian orange wine can be: precise, characterful, and incredibly drinkable. Produced by Johanna Markowitsch in Carnuntum under her JOMA label, it reflects a philosophy of making natural wines that are fun, independent, and easy to enjoy, without sacrificing depth or authenticity.
The fruit is sourced from vineyards around Göttlesbrunn on sandy loess soils, an area well suited to white varieties thanks to a cooler climate and the moderating influence of the Danube. The core of the blend is Grüner Veltliner, with a small but significant portion of Muskateller adding lift and aromatics. This pairing gives the wine its distinctive balance of structure and perfume: Grüner provides backbone and subtle spice, while Muskateller delivers floral and citrus-driven top notes.
In the cellar, Spektakel Orange is made with a gentle, low-intervention approach. The grapes spend roughly 15 days on their skins before and during spontaneous fermentation in open vats. Extraction is deliberately restrained, more like a slow infusion than a heavy red wine, followed by seven months on full lees in stainless steel. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration and only modest additions of sulfur, preserving texture, aromatics, and a slight haze that signals its natural style.
In the glass, expect a savory, layered profile rather than simple fruitiness. Aromas suggest stone and orchard fruit, spice-dusted apple, dried apricot, and fresh herbs over a subtle, gravelly mineral base. On the palate, it’s dry and medium-bodied, with gentle tannins from the skin contact giving a light grip and a long, mouth-watering finish. A short decant or a few minutes in the glass reward you with extra complexity as the wine opens.
Spektakel Orange is highly versatile at the table. Its structure and acidity let it stand up to richer dishes, while its freshness cuts through spice and fat. Think roast chicken with herbs, grilled salmon, aromatic Middle Eastern plates, or a spread of aged cheeses and charcuterie. Whether you’re already into orange wines or just curious to try your first, Joma Spektakel Orange delivers a serious yet approachable experience in every bottle.
